Telehealth Consent
The short version
- A video visit happens over a live video connection instead of in person.
- Your provider can't examine you physically, and some concerns may need an in-person visit.
- Calls can drop or lag. Materia+ isn't responsible for connection problems.
- Video visits are encrypted and never recorded by Materia+.
- Materia+ can't locate you or send help during a visit. In an emergency, end the call and call 911 or your local emergency number.
- You can ask your provider for an in-person visit instead at any time.
1.What you're agreeing to
You agree to have your visit by video, knowing its limits.
You give this consent when you book a video visit on Materia+. Your provider may also ask for their own consent. By booking a video visit, you understand and agree to the points below.
2.How video visits work
A live video call between you and your provider.
Your visit takes place over a live video connection instead of in person. You join from your own device. You'll need a working camera, microphone, browser and internet connection.
3.Limits of a video visit
Your provider can't examine you physically.
Video visits have limits compared with an in-person visit. Your provider can't do a physical examination, and some concerns may need a follow-up visit in person. You can ask your provider for an in-person visit instead at any time.
4.Technical problems
Calls can drop. Materia+ isn't responsible for connection problems.
Materia+ provides its video tools "as is" and "as available". Calls can drop, freeze or lag because of internet connections, devices, browsers or networks. To the extent the law allows, Materia+ isn't responsible for interrupted or dropped calls, technical glitches or delays. If a call drops, you and your provider can reconnect or rebook.
5.Privacy
Encrypted, never recorded.
Video visits run on the Amazon Chime SDK, part of Amazon Web Services, with call media handled in AWS's Canada (Central) region in Montreal. Video and audio are encrypted and carried live between you and your provider. Materia+ doesn't record visits, and no video or audio is kept after the visit ends. As with any service that uses the internet, there is a small risk of disruption or a privacy breach during transmission, despite reasonable safeguards. Our Privacy Policy has the details.
6.Where you are during the visit
Your provider has to be allowed to practise where you are.
Some providers, such as registered psychotherapists and registered massage therapists, must be licensed or registered both where they practise and where you are during the visit. If your provider isn't allowed to see clients where you are, they may cancel or decline the visit.
7.Emergencies
Materia+ can't locate you or send help. In an emergency, end the call and get help.
Materia+ can't locate you, step in during a crisis or contact emergency services during a visit. If you have a medical emergency or a mental health crisis during a video visit, managing it is up to you and your provider. End the call and call 911 or your local emergency number, or go to the nearest emergency department. Our Health & Emergency Disclaimer has more.
8.Withdrawing consent
You can stop at any time.
You can end a video visit at any time and ask for an in-person visit instead. Your provider's cancellation policy applies to any change to your booking.
